Social Skills and Relationships
Teaching Respect, Empathy and Kindness
Teaching children respect, empathy and kindness is essential for their social development. These values help them build positive relationships and develop a strong moral character.
Role Modelling: Children learn by observing their parents. Demonstrate respectfulness, empathy and kindness in your interactions with others. Show them how to consider other people’s feelings and respond with compassion.
Storytelling and Books: Use stories and books to teach respect, empathy and kindness. Choose books that illustrate these values and discuss the characters’ actions and feelings with your child.
Encouraging Sharing and Helping: Encourage your child to share their toys and belongings with others. Teach them the joy of helping others and participating in acts of kindness, such as giving charity or assisting a friend in need.
Random Acts of Kindness: Encourage your child to perform random acts of kindness. It could be as simple as holding the door for someone or leaving a positive note. These small gestures create a ripple effect of kindness.
Clear Expectations: Set clear expectations for respectful behaviour. Children need guidelines and boundaries, even if they sometimes rebel against them.
On Respecting Elders:
Anas bin Malik narrated that: “An older man came to talk to the Prophet, and the people were hesitant to make room for him. The Prophet said: ;He is not one of us who does not have mercy on our young and does not respect our elders.”
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1919
Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, ‘A rider should greet a pedestrian; a pedestrian should greet one who is sitting; and a small group should greet a large group (of people).”
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
The narration in Al-Bukhari adds: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “The young should greet the elderly.”Riyad as-Salihin 857
Effective Communication
Effective communication skills are vital for building and maintaining relationships.
Gratitude and Appreciation: Teach your child to express gratitude and appreciation. Encourage them to say “jazakallahu Khair” when someone does something kind for them. Gratitude fosters positive feelings and strengthens relationships.
Apologising and Forgiving: Help your child understand the importance of apologizing when they make a mistake. Likewise, teach them to forgive others when they apologise. This promotes empathy and healing in relationships.
Listening Skills: Teach your child the importance of listening to others. Encourage them to make eye contact with mahram and lowering their gazes with non-mahram, to pay attention, and respond appropriately in conversations.
Expressing Feelings: Help your child articulate their feelings and thoughts. Provide them with the language to express themselves clearly and respectfully.
Body Language: Discuss non-verbal cues with your child. Explain how smiling, hugging, and maintaining open body language can convey kindness and warmth. Also, teach them to recognise signs of discomfort or sadness in others.
Conflict Resolution: Teach your child how to resolve conflicts peacefully. Role-play different scenarios and discuss strategies for finding solutions that are fair and respectful to everyone involved.
Sibling Relationships
Fostering healthy relationships between siblings is crucial for family harmony.
Promoting Cooperation: Encourage siblings to work together and support each other. Create opportunities for them to collaborate on tasks and activities.
Handling Conflicts: Teach your children how to handle disagreements calmly and respectfully. Help them understand each other’s perspectives and find mutually acceptable solutions.
Celebrating Individuality: Recognise and celebrate each child’s unique strengths and interests. Avoid comparisons and ensure each child feels valued for who they are.
Boundaries and Non-Mahram
In Islam, mothers play a vital role in nurturing children’s understanding of boundaries and the concept of mahram (those with whom marriage is prohibited). Here are some ways you can guide your children:
Teach About Mahram Relationships: Explain the concept of mahram, emphasising that certain family members (like parents, siblings, and grandparents) are considered mahram and that marriage between them is not allowed. Use age-appropriate language to convey this information.
Lead by Example: Model appropriate behaviour and interactions with family members. Children learn by observing their parents, so demonstrating respect and maintaining proper boundaries is crucial.
Discuss Privacy and Modesty: Teach your children about personal space, privacy, and modesty. Explain that certain parts of the body are private and should not be exposed to others. Encourage modest dress and behaviour, especially around non-mahram individuals.
Use Stories and Examples: Share stories from Islamic history or the lives of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his companions. Highlight instances where they maintained proper boundaries. Discuss scenarios where boundaries were crossed and the consequences that followed i.e., the story of Yusuf (A.S), the story of Qabil and Habil and their respective twin sisters).
Emphasise Respect and Kindness: Teach children to treat everyone with respect, regardless of their mahram status. Kindness, empathy, and good manners are essential. Explain that respecting boundaries is a way to honour Allah’s guidance.
Answer Questions Honestly: As children grow older, they may have questions about relationships and boundaries. Be open and honest in your responses, using age-appropriate language.
